Why Mizaan

The moment calls for a connected, principled generation of leaders, beyond isolated excellence.

The moment

American Muslim leaders carry three arenas at once.

Each brings real pressure. Leaders are expected to show up in all three.

The global Ummah

Wars, humanitarian crises, geopolitical realities, postcolonial recovery and ongoing obligations across borders. American Muslim leaders must remain connected beyond the nation-state.

Three common responses, each incomplete.

Each has its place. None of them, alone, builds the faith, character and institutions the moment requires.

Withdrawal

Build a refuge or an enclave. Needed at times, but it can become disengagement from daʿwah, service and collective responsibility.

Leaving (hijrah)

Move somewhere safer or more suitable. Valid for some, but relocation doesn't resolve collective needs or guarantee safety.

Politics alone

Build representation and influence. Often necessary, but it can't replace sound faith, character, institutions and tarbiyah.

The opportunity

The opportunity is larger than the threat.

Global Ummah

New professional capacity, intellectual work and cross-border learning.

Public contribution

Growing civic organization, representation and new alliances.

Community renewal

More scholars, educators and learning pathways; a proud public identity.

Historic foundations

Black American Muslim institutions and leaders are a foundational pillar of Islam in the U.S.

Our north star

A vision for the next 100 years of Muslim leadership in America.

It asks leaders for both faithful, continuous development and thoughtful, collective contribution.

Allah will raise for this ummah at the turn of every hundred years those who renew its deen. SUNAN ABĪ DĀWŪD 4291

Rooted in tradition

Sound ʿaqīdah, worship, tazkiyah, family, knowledge and moral integrity.

Iḥsān in action

Mercy, courage, competence, public benefit, sound judgment and accountability.

Ummatic in thought

Beyond one city, ethnicity, institution or country, with the Ummah in view.

Collaborative

Scholars, educators, strategists, advocates, youth workers and builders together.

The missing infrastructure

The talent exists. The connective layer doesn't.

Here is what holds senior leaders back today, and what a community like Mizaan provides.

TodayWith Mizaan
Institutional silos

Everyone works locally

Masājid, schools and nonprofits pursue local priorities; links to a broader strategy are informal.

Taʿāruf

Leaders know one another

An avenue to understand what everyone is working on, and why.

Isolation

Senior leaders work alone

Hard decisions, too few trusted peers who understand the work and offer honest perspective.

Peer counsel

Break the echo chamber

Fresh perspective from peers in different circumstances keeps programming relevant.

Divided spheres

Knowledge, thought and action apart

Scholarship, analysis and frontline organizing too often operate separately.

ʿIlm meets ʿamal

Activists and scholars together

Each sees a different part of the community; each learns the other's struggles.

Development fades

Tarbiyah stops at the top

Most formation targets youth. Few pathways serve those already giving the most.

Formation

Mentorship for senior leaders

Targeted mentorship and peer advising that let leaders be beneficiaries too, making their work more effective.

How it works

From individual excellence to collective responsibility.

  1. Join

Proven, coachable changemakers enter a selective community.

  2. Develop

Grow in faith, character, judgment and capability.

  3. Connect

Build ties with peers, scholars and global counterparts.

  4. Scale

Form stronger teams and launch joint efforts.
